Safe Food For Canadians Regulations (SFCR) Licensing

SFCR Licensing

As per Part 3, Division 1 of the SFCR, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency issues a license to businesses conducting food related activities which include:

  • Importing food
  • Exporting Food
  • Various activities associated with handling foods including manufacturing, processing, treating, preserving, grading, packaging or labeling
  • Slaughter food animals
  • Storage for the purpose of shipping to another province or out of Canada
  • Storage and handling for CFIA inspection
  • Exporting food commodities

The license application is an online portal with a fee associated with the respective activity.  Licenses are valid for a set time and will be subject to renewal.  As well, any changes to the food license (eg. Site location, activities, etc.) will require an amendment to the SFCR License.
