SUPPLIER REVIEW

Importers must conduct an evaluation of their foreign supplier’s performance and the risk posed by the food.

CORRECTIVE ACTIONS

If hazards are identified, importers must take corrective actions to ensure the food is not adulterated or misbranded and, if applicable, take appropriate action to prevent recurrence.

REASSESSMENT

Importers are required to reassess the risk posed by each foreign supplier at least every three years, or when there is a significant change in the supplier’s production process or in the importer’s own procedures.

RECORD KEEPING

Importers must maintain records documenting their compliance with FSVP requirements. These records should be readily available for inspection by the FDA.

QUALIFIED INDIVIDUALS

Importers must ensure that individuals who develop and perform the FSVP are qualified to do so, including receiving appropriate training.

IMPORTER ID

Importers must provide specific information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) when filing entries for the food, including their DUNS number, which identifies them as the importer of record.

VQIP PROGRAM

Importers can also participate in VQIP, a voluntary fee-based program that provides expedited review and importation of human and animal foods into the United States.
